Army Military Police Gorget (Ringkragen) w/Neck Chain. This superb, unissued gorget was originally obtained from a Connecticut WW II veteran who stated, "at the end of the war his unit entered some kind of headquarters that was full of metals, uniforms and other items that he and others grabbed and stuffed into boxes and bags". The gorget features a frosted aluminum finished, half moon shaped (Halbmondfoermiges) shield measuring 16.5cm wide x 7.5cm high (6 3/8" x 2 7/8"). Attached to the face of the shield is a spread winged Army eagle above a dark gray pebbled banner scroll with the inscription, "Feldgendarmerie" in raised Latin letters. On the upper corners of the shield are two pebbled buttons by which the neck chain is attached to the rear of the gorget. The eagle, letters, and buttons are painted in a luminous paint that glows at night. The neck chain measuring 25 ½" in length is composed of 42 oval wire rings joined by flat frosted aluminum connectors. On the upper left reverse of the shield is a flat metal tang to secure the running end of the neck chain while on the left center is a flat metal tang to secure the gorget to the uniform button hole. Both tangs are unmarked. Reverse of the shield is covered in a tan cardboard backing in unissued condition as described on page 44 of UNIFORMS & TRADITIONS of the GERMAN ARMY 1933-1945 Vol. 2 by John R. Angolia and Adolf Schlicht. Metal shield, neck chain and luminous painted eagle, letters and buttons retain virtually 100% of the factory finish and luminous paint with no wear, age or tears to the cardboard backing. Superb example originally veteran obtained. Near MINT/MINT (26289) $785. SOLD
