Early
Imperial Hunting Hirschfänger w/Deluxe Hilt/Scabbard
Fittings & Skinning Knife. Weyersberg & Stamm,
Solingen, with upper line arched above two lower lines

"Little has yet been discovered of this firm
apart from the name and place of operation.

general lack of Prussian weapons (although some are
known) suggests that Weyersberg & Stamm spent
much of its time fulfilling contracts placed by the
government of Bayern. The company was working 1817-1872."
Heavy cast brass hilt fittings show minor surface
wear to the highlights of the ornate pommel cap in
the form of a reclining hunting hound and crossguard
with large quillon block with a raised reclining lion
on the obverse. The quillons are in the form of a
well detailed lion's head on the right and a panther
head on the left while the oval clamshell features
a European bear in a forest setting within a raised
floral border. Fluted, ivory grip shows light wear/age
with one small hairline crack on the lower reverse
adjacent to ferrule, but no nicks or chips. Plain,
polished, single-fullered blade measuring 14 ¾"
long grades VG+/Exc. with minor surface wear/runner
marks, and uniform gray shadowing/speckling, but no
nicks to cutting edge. Blade is complete with green
felt buffer pad. Skinning knife measuring 7 ½"
in length grades VG/ VG+ showing surface wear/graying
to blade with a missing chip on the obverse ivory
grip and several strands of copper wire wrapped around
the upper grip (purpose of this wire is unknown).
Medium, reddish-brown, leather scabbard shows surface
wear and scuffs, but no rips, tears or creases, and
no damage to the reverse stitching. Dent-free, deluxe,
brass, scabbard fittings show light surface wear/age
patina with two, side-mounted suspension clips on
the upper fitting which is formed to accept the skinning
knife. Obverse upper fitting features incised floral
leaf borders on the upper portion above a raised motif
on the lower portion. Motif surrounding a hunting
horn and sword on the lower portion. The lower obverse
fitting features a raised floral motif surrounding
a motif of a hunting horn, Hirschfänger, and
hunter's boar spear. Exc/Exc++ (24765) $1,995.
