Rare
Long Personalized KS/98 "Brandenburger"
Bayonet.
ACS, scales TM. The regiment "Brandenburg"
was constituted as Sonderverband z.b.V.800 (Special
Unit on Special Assignment) in late August 1939,
and named after its garrison town. It was originally
a commando unit under control of the OKW Counter-Intelligence
Agency. Nickel-plated hilt fittings show light surface
wear/minor crazing with one spot of lifting on the
obverse center of the crossguard. Black bakelite
grip plates are perfect with no cracks or chips,
and hilt is complete with green felt plug. Plated
blade measuring 24.5cm in length grades EX+, showing
surface wear/runner marks primarily near tip, with
some minor lifting to plating on obverse ricasso
adjacent to brown leather blade buffer pad. Obverse
blade is jeweler-engraved in double-line block letters,
"zbV Soldat 1. Aufbaukompanie Erich Koitzsch",
with the reverse blade jeweler-engraved in double-line
block letters, "Hauptmann von Hippel zbV 800-Brandenburger".
Research in the 1939 German Army ranklist indicates
that Hauptmann von Hippel was assigned to Abwehrabteilung
II (Counter-Intelligence Battalion II) under the
control of the Oberkommando der Wehrmacht. This
listing matches exactly the organizational assignment
of Regiment "Brandenburger". Herr von
Hippel appears in the 1944/45 ranklist of the German
Army as an Oberstleutnant (Lieutenant Colonel) assigned
to "OB.KDO. d. W. (Abw II)" (Oberkommando
der Wehrmacht Abwehr Battalion II). Photocopies
of documentation are included with the bayonet.
Dent-free steel scabbard grades VG+, retaining approximately
50/60% of the black enamel, with much crazing and
lifting primarily to center obverse, and is complete
with black leather bayonet frog in VG+/excellent
condition. Rare personalized bayonet from a Commando
Unit, complete with documentation, recently obtained
in Germany. EX (25896) $1,050.
