Short
KS/98 Bayonet w/Single Etched Blade, Frog &
Portepee. No maker. Although unmarked this bayonet
was most certainly produced by the E. Pack &
Söhne firm as the grip plates are complete
with the Pack style offset retaining screws and
the blade etch pattern appears in the E. Pack &
Söhne 1938 catalog as motif Nr.11, "Neutral".
Photographs of this etch pattern appear on page
254 of German Etched Dress Bayonets by Wayne
H. Techet. Nickel-plated hilt fittings show minor
surface crazing, but no lifting and pommel slot
is complete with original red felt plug. Black bakelite
grip plates are perfect with no cracks or chips
with no damage to the retaining screws. Plated blade
measuring 19.8cm in length grades EX+ showing light
surface wear/runner marks and some minor gray speckling/shadowing,
but no nicks to cutting edge and is complete with
black leather buffer pad. Obverse blade features
a 5 ½" long frosted panel raised floral
motifs flanking the three-line remembrance of service
time inscription, "Zur Erinnerung an meine
Dienstzeit bei der Panzer-Abw.-Abtlg. 14" in
raised gothic letters. The etched panel retains
100% of the background frosting. Dent-free steel
scabbard retains approximately 98% of the original
black enamel showing only faint surface wear with
no crazing and no major loss of paint. Black, pebbled
leather, double-stitched frog grades Exc+ showing
wear primarily to belt loop portion and is complete
with Exc+ portepee with green strap/slide/acorn
and yellow stem for 3rd Battalion Staff. Nice Pack
produced example with SCARCE blade etch. Exc+/Exc++
(24851) $695.
