Description

CARL EICKHORN (back to back squirrels) TM.  An example of this ornate dagger appears on page 102 of 1908 Musterbuch der Waffenfabrik Carl Eickhorn Solingen as Model Nr. 778.  In addition, photographs of an Eickhorn marked example of this pattern dagger appear on pages 226 and 227 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany by LTC (Ret.) Thomas M. Johnson and Thomas T. Wittmann.  Ornate gilded pommel features the head of a distinguished fire fighter in Imperial helmet with leather neck guard. Gilded crossguard features a center fire helmet surrounded by oak leaves with quillons in the shape of fire axe heads.  Both pommel and crossguard show light wear to highlights of gilding with much frosted gold remaining in recesses. Black celluloid Bakelite grip is perfect with no cracks or chips and with twisted silver wire wrap present. Plated, double-etched, 19″ blade grades EX+ with some light graying on obverse and reverse. Both sides of the blade feature a lightly etched floral motif with center panels depicting various pieces of firefighting equipment. Red felt blade buffer pad is present. Black leather scabbard shows light surface wear with no creases, rips or tears nor damage to reverse stitching. Upper, center, and lower gilded brass fittings show age and wear with a small depression on upper and lower fittings. Reverse retaining staples are present as well as the upper and center suspension rings. A very rare Imperial dagger!
