Carl Eickhorn Solingen, squirrel w/serrated tail within small double-oval TM. Early nickel-silver hilt fittings show minor surface wear with dark “gun-metal” blue/gray age patina, with portions of factory darkening remaining in recesses of crossguard detail. The reverse integral ferrule is deeply stamped with the accountability number, “Fü 770”. Since the 1934 pattern hewer was worn by both officers and enlisted personnel until the 1937 introduction of the officer’s model, the abbreviation, “Fü” could be for “Führer (Leader/Officer). Medium brown stag grip plates are perfect with no cracks or chips and show nice age toning. Polished blade grades EX/EX+ showing minor surface wear/runner marks with uniform gray shadowing to obverse/reverse with two tiny nicks to lower cutting edge, but no pitting. Deeply-etched motto retains 100% original of the light gray background frosting and the reverse is marked with the RAD diamond and “Ges.Gesch”. Steel scabbard retains approximately 95% of the factory black enamel with wear primarily to the left edge of shell and surface crazing to the obverse/reverse with one faint depression to the upper obverse shell. Silver-plated scabbard fittings show minor surface wear with dark “gun-metal” blue/gray age patina matching the hilt fittings and portions lacquer remaining on the obverse upper fitting with factory darkening remaining in the recesses of the obverse scroll-work design. The scabbard throat is deeply stamped with the accountability number, “Fü 888” and is complete with undamaged retaining screws. The difference in accountability numbers is probably due to a switch of parts during maintenance or an oversight during training. Nice early example with accountability numbers. EX+.
