Description

HAENEL within an arrow above C.G. Haenel Suhl, Waffen-u. Fahrrad-Fabrik beneath TM. The C.G. Haenel Suhl, Waffen-u. Fahrrad-Fabrik was located in Suhl in the Thüringer Wald NE of Frankfurt. As stated on page 178 of The Sword and Knife Makers of Germany 1850-2000 Volume I by the late Anthony Carter, “…,Many SA daggers were made during 1934-35 with Haenel’s full trademark on the blades…”. Nickel silver hilt fittings show light surface wear/yellow age patina with reverse lower crossguard SA group marked “Sa” (Sachsen). Walnut-brown, oak-grained wooden grip with superb, early production quality grip-to-crossguard fit, shows light surface wear and a few faint surface depressions but, no cracks or chips and is complete with silver grip eagle and SA insert perfectly inset. Polished blade grades VG+ showing surface wear/runner marks and uniform gray speckling/shadowing and some spotting and a small “crimp” to blade tip but, no pitting or nicks to cutting edges. Deeply etched motto shows light wear to the dark gray background frosting. Dent-free steel scabbard shows speckling to the brown anodization/vfactory lacquer but, no scuffs or major loss of factory finish. Nickel-silver scabbard fittings with undamaged scabbard screws, show surface wear/age patina matching the hilt fittings with a few faint “pecks” to the lower fitting and one small surface depression to the lower ball. For more information on the edged weapons manufacturers located in the Thüringer Wald area see pages 270 – 295 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich, Volume VII. EX+ (26936)
