Description

WK&C, side-by-side king’s head and knight’s helmet TM.  Konteradmiral Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer was born on 24 March 1900 in Frankfurt, entered the Imperial Navy in July 1917, and served in various command and staff assignments in the Reichsmarine during the Weimar Republic.  He was appointed Naval Adjutant to the Führer in 1935 and served in this capacity from March 1935 – June 1938 and again from September 1939 – May 1945.  He was injured in the 20 July 1944 bomb attempt on Hitler’s life, but survived the war and died in Munich on 4 March 1981.  This Kinder Sabel, used by Admiral Puttkamer, was recently obtained in Germany directly from the von Puttkamer family and is complete with rare black leather hangers.  Documentation on Admiral Puttkamer is included with the Säbel.  Gilded brass hilt fittings show light surface wear with virtually 100% of the factory gilting remaining on the lion head pommel without glass eyes, backstrap with heavily-chiseled floral pattern, as well as non-folding handguard with Imperial crown and fouled anchor motif.  Off-white celluloid-over-wood grip shows light surface wear with nice age toning and one tiny scuff to lower obverse but no cracks or chips.  Grip is complete with tight triple twisted gilt wire wrap.  Polished double-etched blade measuring 20 1/8” in length grades EX++, showing only light surface wear with no nicks to the cutting edge as commonly found on Kinder Sabels.  Both obverse and reverse blade feature 12 1/8” long etched panels with a raised floral motif surrounding a center panel of military equipment, to include flags, helmet, armor, and crossed cannon barrels.  Blade is complete with red felt blade buffer pad.  Black leather scabbard shows surface wear and scuffing, with one crease to the lower scabbard approximately 2” above the lower fitting but, no rips or tears and no damage to the reverse stitching.  Gilded brass upper, center, and lower fittings show light surface wear with one tiny surface depression to the upper obverse of the lower fitting.  All fittings are numbered, “15” beneath the three retaining staples.  The RARE black leather strap-type hangers grade EX+ showing light wear and minor age cracking but no rips or tears.  Nice Imperial Navy Kinder Säbel with RARE leather hangers obtained directly from the family of Admiral Karl-Jesko von Puttkamer.  EX+/EX++
