Description

No maker.  As stated on pages 28 – 31 of “Collecting the Edged Weapons of the Third Reich, Volume V”, 1936 Chained SS daggers produced during the 1936-1937 period can be found with a combination of nickel-silver & plated fittings, anodized & painted scabbards, and Type I & Type II chain hangers. This example exhibits some of the above variations. Nickel-silver crossguards and pommel nut shh uncleaned, greenishngers with red leather backings grade EX+ showing light wear to leather and age patina to the brow minor surface wear with uncleaned patina.  Ebony grip shows light surface wear but, no cracks or major chips.. The silver grip eagle, and SS insert are properly inset.  Polished blade grades EX++ showing  very minor runner marks and some speckling to reverse lower portion of blade but, no pitting or nicks to cutting edges and no damage to the blade tip. Deeply etched motto shows almost no wear to the light gray background frosting. Dent-free steel scabbard retains approximately 90% of the black enamel showing scratches/missing paint primarily where chain hanger has rubbed against the shell, but no major damage. Solid nickel upper, center, and lower scabbard fittings show light surface wear/age patina with a few minor depressions to the lower fitting. The center scabbard band is retained by a single screw as normally seen on painted scabbards, with no damage to the retaining screws. Solid nickel, Type II chain hanger features excellent detail to the chain link skulls and SS runes with most of the factory darkening remaining in the background of links. Chain hanger is lightly SS proof marked on the reverse and the clover leaf is the non-cut out variety as is proper for Type II chain hangers.
