Description

No maker. A photograph of a similar Hirschfänger, produced by the Carl Eickhorn Firm appears on page 291 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany. Nickel-silver hilt fittings show light surface wear/age patina with virtually 100% of the factory gilting remaining in the recesses of the heavily chiseled oak leaf pommel, serrated ferrule, crossguard with oak leaf quillon block, and recurved stag and doe head quillons. Well detailed, scalloped clamshell, features a forest scene with hunting hounds attacking a boar. Dark brown stag horn grip is perfect with no cracks, chips, or damage, and is complete with three silver acorns/oak leaves on the obverse. Plain, plated blade measuring 12″ in length grades EX/EX+ showing light surface wear/runner marks with some dark gray speckling/shadowing on obverse/reverse flats of blade, but no nicks to the cutting edge. Spine of blade features an etched laurel leaf motif and blade is complete with green felt buffer pad. Black leather scabbard shows virtually no surface wear, nicks but or creases and no damage to the reverse stitching. Upper nickel-silver and lower gilted brass fitting show surface wear/age patina with several depressions to the lower fitting. Both upper and lower reverse retaining staples present. Reverse upper fitting is jeweler-engraved with the 8-line, presentation inscription, “Ehrengeschenk des Allgemeinen Deutschen Jagdschutz verein Landesverein Elsass-Lothringen 1906” (Presentation from the Hunting Protection-Conservation League Alsace-Lorraine). Obverse lower fitting features a raised hunting motif of a hunting dog, oak leaves, and three Auerhahns. Nice presentation Imperial Hunting Hirschfänger. EX+.
