Description

WEYERSBERG & Co., SOLINGEN three line arched TM. Gilded brass, deluxe hilt fittings show surface wear to highlights with portions of the matte, honey-gold, factory gilding remaining in the recesses of the pommel, ferrule, knuckle-bow and folding handguard with Imperial eagle and “WR II ” cipher. Fittings feature heavily chiseled pommel with raised motif of Knight’s helmet, breastplate, shield and sword flanked by oak and laurel leaf sprigs, oak leaf embellished knuckle-bow and raised, stippled border on folding handguard. Pommel cap is jeweler engraved with the owner’s initials, “RE “. Initial’s are in reverse form so that pommel cap could be used as a stamp. Black ray-skin covered grip shows surface wear and loss of color. Grip is complete with brass WII cipher pinned to the obverse grip and is complete with twisted triple silver wire wrap. Straight, plated, double-fullered, double-etched blade measuring 30 ¼’ in length grades EX++ showing light surface wear/runner marks with minor speckling on ricasso and some surface scratches primarily near reverse tip, but no pitting or nicks to cutting edge. Both obverse and reverse blade feature 14 ½” long frosted panels with raised floral motif and depictions of military equipment, flags and cannon barrels. Reverse blade features the presentation inscription in raised gothic letters, “Unserem l. Bruder Reinhold. 8.2..1912. / von seinnen Gesshwistern.” (Our dear Brother Reinhold 08 February 1912 / from your Sisters). Obverse ricasso is jeweler engraved in gold-filled script letters with the inscription, “Reinhold Eichgrün / Generalkommando / XV. A.K. Strasburg Els / (2/136)” (Reinhold Eichgrün / Corps Headquarters / X.V. Army Corps Strasburg Alsace / 2nd Battalion, Infantry Regiment 136). The spine features the maker’s name, Weyersberg & Co Solingen in raised capital letters and is complete with brown leather blade buffer pad. Steel scabbard retains approximately 65% of the original black enamel showing surface wear/crazing and loss of paint on lower shell and drag and one depression on the lower obverse. Nice M-89 Infantry Degen with unique blade and ricasso presentation inscriptions. EX+/EX++
