Description

No maker. Gilded brass hilt fittings show light surface wear to hilt/spine, knuckle-bow/crossguard, deer hoof quillon and to the clamshell. Beautifully aged ivory grip plates grade near MINT and feature three gilded studs to obverse and reverse, with only faint hairline cracks running vertically along the obverse plate. Plated double-etched blade grades MINT with only faint runner marks and NO speckling or chips. Obverse features spectacular, four line presentation etch: “IHREM SCHUTZENMEISTER K.KALZ, ZUM 25 JAHRIGEN SCHUTZENMEISTER JUBILAUM, GEWIDMET VON SEINER SCHUTZENKOMPANIE, BAD SACHSA, SCHUTZENFEST 1925”: Our Esteemed Marksman Master (Expert) K. Kalz, on the 25th Anniversary of the Markmanship Master, Presented by your Marksmanship Company, Bad Sachsa, Marksmanship Celebration 1925. Bad Sachsa is known for being the town where Berthold Maria Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg and his four siblings were sent by the Nazis in 1944, following the failed 20 July plot. Their father, Claus von Stauffenberg, was executed and their pregnant mother was interned in a concentration camp with two elders. The Stauffenberg children lived in Bad Sachsa during 1944-45. Other families of the executed officers were imprisoned here and were left there without their parents and with changed names. Reverse blade etch features scenes of Auerhahns, mountain goat, and marder in forest setting. Black leather crease-free scabbard shows light wear and no rips, tears or damage to reverse stitching but, does show much scuffing to black leather. Upper and lower brass fittings show almost no wear/age and NO depressions or dents. Hirschfanger is complete with RARE “Oberlandforster” portepee in Near MINT condition showing almost no wear. A very interesting forestry piece in near perfect condition.
