Third Reich Army Dove Head Sword w/Personalized, Double-Etched Blade & Sword Knot.“WMW” monogram pierced by a sword monogram pierced by a sword (Waffenfabrik Max Weyersberg) within a single-circle TM. Gilded brass hilt fittings show light wear/age patina with factory gilding/lacquer on the incised oak leaf motif on the pommel/backstrap, ferrule and knuckle-bow with cast, closed wing, Wehrmacht eagle within a rectangular stippled panel on the obverse langet. Black celluloid-over-wood grip shows light surface wear/age but, no cracks, scuffs or chips and is complete with tight triple wire wrap. Plated double-etched blade measuring 32 ½” in length grades EX++Near MINT showing minor surface wear/runner marks, but no lifting, pittinf or nicks to cutting edge, and is complete with original tan leather buffer pad. Obverse blade features a 15″ long, light gray, frosted panel with raised floral/oak leaf motif, stahlhelm w/crossed rifles and Wehrmacht open-wing, eagle/swastika and floral motif flanking a central panel inscribed, “Kavallerie Regiment 18”. The reverse blade features a 15″ long, light gray, frosted panel with raised floral/oak leaf motif, stahlhelm with crossed rifles and Wehrmacht closed-wing, eagle/swastika and floral motif flanking a central panel motif of a charging Cavalry Troop with Officer, trumpeter and troopers with drawn swords. The blade retains 100% of the frosted background finish on the blade panels. Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately 95% of the factory black enamel showing surface scratches to obverse/reverse shell with loss of paint to the drag and to the edge of the shell where the sword knot has rubbed over the years. The original sword knot grades EX++/Near MINT showing only faint wear to gray/green leather strap with aluminum bullion stripes and bullion stem/crown/acorn with gray woven acorn insert. Research in Das Deutsche Heer 1939 indicates that in 1939 Kavallerie Regiment 18 was assigned to, and under direct operational control of the German V Army Corps and garrisoned at Schwäbisch Gmund located approximately 45km East of Stuttgart.
