Description

C.Eppenstein-Söhne Solingen, a pair of winged horns within an elongated double-oval TM; SCARCE maker with an estimated 7,000 daggers produced (see page 300 of the Fisher Quick Reference by R. & R. Fisher). As stated on page 145 of The Sword And Knife Makkers Of Germany 1850-2000 Volume 1 by the late Anthony Carter, …”A few SA and NSKK daggers were made with their distinctive oval trademark”. Nickel-silver hilt fittings show light surface wear/age patina with reverse lower crossguard group marked, “Ho” (Hochland), NOTE: The group mark is stamped up-side-down and off center to the left which indicates it was probably stamped at the SA Gau headquarters, not at the factory. Medium-brown, fine-grained wooden grip shows light wear with minor chipping to the lower obverse and reverse adjacent to the crossguard, but no cracks or major depressions, and features early production quality grip-to-crossguard fit. Grip is complete with silver grip eagle and SA insert properly inset. Early mirror polished blade grades EX+, showing surface wear/runner marks, light gray shadowing and some gray speckling primarily near crossguard, but no pitting, nicks to cutting edges and no damage to blade tip. Deeply-etched motto retains 100% of the light gray background frosting which shows a few minor gray specks. Steel scabbard retains approximately 95% of the brown anodization, showing light surface wear/speckling with one very faint depression to the obverse center shell. The nickel-silver scabbard fittings show light surface wear/age patina with a depression and split to the lower ball, but no damage to the scabbard screws. EX+ (26322)
