Description
No maker. This sword is personalized on the blade etch to the Bavarian 8th Chevauleger (Light Horse Regiment) and recently obtained in Switzerland. This regiment, raised in 1909, was the last Chevauleger Regiment organized and was garrisoned at Dillingen, northwest of Munich. A photograph of a Bavarian Chevauleger NCO wearing this pattern sword appears on page 155 of Collecting the Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany. Nickel-plated hilt shows wear/crazing to flat pommel, grooved knuckle-bow and folding handguard with the arms of Bavaria on obverse guard. Handguard is slightly bent preventing the handguard from opening fully. Black celluloid grip with horizontal grooves without wire wrap is perfect with no cracks or chips. Plated double-etched blade measuring 32 ¾” in length grades excellent showing light surface wear with a few spots of lifting, but no nicks to cutting edge or damage to the etched panels. Obverse blade features a 13 ¼” long etched panel with a central inscription in raised Gothic letters, “KGL. Bayr. 8. Chev. Regt.” (Royal Bavarian 8th Chevauleger Regiment) flanked by floral designs, military equipment, and a raised horse head. Reverse blade features a 13 ¼” long etched panel depicting a banner with inscription in raised Gothic letters, “In Treue Fest” (Steadfast with Loyalty) flanked by a raised Bavarian lion with royal shield and a detailed depiction of the unit’s barracks in Dillengen beneath the raised inscription, “Luitpold-Kas.d. 8. Chev. Reg.” (Luitpold of Barracks of the 8th Chevauleger Regiment). Blade is complete with brown leather blade buffer pad. Dent-free steel scabbard retains approximately 60% of original black enamel, showing surface wear and crazing. Nice, untouched sword from the last Bavarian White Horse Regiment. EX.
