An illustration of this pattern sword appears in the 1908 Musterbuch der Waffenfabrick Carl Eickhorn Solingen as Preussischer Kavallerie-Extrasäbel No 776. This sword is personalized on the blade etch to Jäger Regiment zu Pferde No 5 which was raised in 1908 and garrisoned at Mülhausen located approximately 35km NE of Konstanz. A photograph of this pattern Prussian säbel with folding hand-guard appears on page 154 of Collecting The Edged Weapons of Imperial Germany. The domed, steel pommel nut shows the usual wear and minor loss of plating. Black, bakelite grip with horizontal grooves without wire wrap shows minor wear with a crack and small chip on the lower obverse where the folding handguard has rested against the grip. Straight, plated, double-etched blade measuring 32″ in length grades EX++ showing light surface wear with a few specks of graying/lifting, but no nicks to cutting edge or damage to the etched panels. Obverse blade features a 16″ long etched panel (Eickhorn pattern No. 494) with a central inscription in raised Gothic letters, “Jäger Regiment zu Pferde No 5″ flanked by floral designs and military equipment motifs on gray frosted background. The Reverse blade features a 16” long etched panel (Eickhorn pattern No. 494) a central floral motif flanked by floral designs of the Prussian Eagle and military equipment motifs on gray frosted background. Spine of blade features a raised laurel leaf motif and is complete with red felt blade buffer pad.. Dent-free steel scabbard with stationary suspension ring retains virtually 100% of original black anodization, showing minor surface wear to the suspension band and ring. The unmarked scabbard throat is complete with both undamaged scabbard screws. Nice Prussian Jäger Regiment zu Pferde double-etched sword. EX++
