M Neumann, Hoflieferant Berlin. TM. An illustration of this pattern sword appears in the 1908 Carl Eickhorn “Musterbuch der Waffenfabrik” as pattern Nr. 452, “Preussischer Infanterie-Offizier-Degen gerade, mit Füsilier -Montur”. Plain, unadorned solid brass hilt fittings show minor surface wear/age patina to the dove head style pommel/backstrap, smooth knuckle-bow, and crossguard, but no damage or corrosion. Black, sharkskin/rayskin grip shows light surface wear but no rips or tears, and is complete with tight triple wire wrap. Straight, “modified peacock”, double-fullered, double-etched blade measuring 29 ¼” in length grades MINT showing no wear/runner marks with no graying, speckling, pitting or nicks to cutting edge. Both obverse and reverse blade feature 10 ¼” long panels with a floral motifs. Obverse blade features the two-line inscription in raised Gothic letters, “E. Schmitt s/l. Lbb. H. Graff S.S. 1912” (E. Schmitt to his dear friend H. Graff S. S. 1912). The spine of the blade features a motif of raised floral leaves on a gray background and is marked M Neumann, Hoflieferant Berlin in raised letters on a gray background. The blade is complete with red felt blade buffer pad. Straight scabbard with one suspension band/ring retains approximately 95% of the original black enamel over showing light age/wear to enamel primarily to upper shell where a once present portepee rubbed against the enamel. There is one “pellet” size depression to the lower shell, but no corrosion or pitting. Included with the sword is an original tobacco brown felt storage bag complete with tie strings showing light wear/age and a few minor nips and tears. Nice presentation sword that could, no doubt, be researched. EX++.
