Carl Eickhorn, raised, gilded squirrel-holding-sword TM.  For more information on Eickhorn “showroom” swords see pages 154 – 173 of Collecting The Edged  Weappons Of The Third Reich  Volume VI. As stated on page 173 of the above reference, “…this grouping of of exceptional Eickhorn factory peieces…all differ one for the other, [and] were all made in the 1936/37 time-frame to support the notoriety and prestige of the Carl Eickhorn weapons factory”.  The gilded, cast brass hilt fittings show virtually no surface wear with 100% of the matte-gold finish remaining in the recesses of the dove head pommel and backstrap with raised laurel leaf design as well as knuckle-bow with raised oak leaf motif. The crossguard features an early, cast Wehrmacht eagle on the obverse langet. The ferrule features a design unique to all the Eickhorn swords consiting of “an endless brace of leaves and branches in a delicately arranged arabesque”. A photograph of this pattern hilt, but with a different ferrule, appears on page 139 of Swords Of Germany 1900/1945 by John R. Angolia as a WKC unattributed pattern.  Black celluloid grip is perfect with no cracks or chips and complete with tight, triple twisted, silver wire wrap. Plated, single-etched, blade measuring 28 5/8” in length grades EX++/Near MINT showing minor age speckling and two small spots of gray shadowing on the lower obverse, but no ligting or nicks to cutting edge. Blade is complete with original brown leather blade buffer pad.  Obverse blade featuers a 10 ¼” long light-gray, frosted etched panel featuring a gilded Eickhorn squirrel-holding-sword above the inscription in gilded Gothic letters, “Original Eickhorn Blanke Waffen”. Etched panel retains 100% of the gray background frosting with light wear to gilding on the letter, “W” in the inscription.  Dent-free steel scabbard retains 100% of the original black factory enamel showing with no surface crazing or age.  Attached to the scabbard suspension ring is an original factory sword tag bearing the pattern number, “227”.  Since this pattern number does not appear in the Eickhorn Kundendienst  it no doubt indicates the number was assigned to the sword as a “Showroom” sword.  Superb example of a RARE Eickhorn example.
