Description

Carl Eickhorn · Solingen ·, serrated tail squirrel within double-oval TM. An illustration of this pattern sword appears in the 01 April 1930 Carl Eickhorn Sales Catalog as pattern Nr. 40. Plain, unadorned nickel-plated hilt fittings surface wear primarily to the pommel area and upper backstrap with light speckling to the knuckle-bow, crossguard and langets. Black bakelite grip shows light wear with a crack on the upper reverse running from the underside of the pommel to the first row of the triple wire wrap. Plated blade measuring 33 ¼” in length grades EX++ showing light surface wear/runner marks with several faint surface “pings” to cutting edge but, no lifting or peeling to plating, and is complete with original brown felt buffer pad. Obverse blade features a 14 ½” long, light gray, frosted panel with raised floral motifs of eagles, flags, crossed cannon barrels and bugle flanking a central panel inscribed, “Reiter= Regiment 18″. The reverse blade features a 14 ¾” long, light gray, frosted panel with raised floral motifs of an Imperial eagle, Imperial, Uhlan helmet, flag and bugle flanking a central panel motif of a charging Uhlan Troop with Officer, trumpeter and troopers with drawn swords. The blade spine with raised laurel leaf motif as well as the blade panels retain 100% of the frosted background finish. Reiter is the designation used in the Reichsheer for Cavalry. Research in the “Rang Liste des Deutschen Reichs herres 1932” indicates that Reiter Regiment 18 was an amalgamated regiment comprised of elements of Dragoon Regiments 20, 21, 22, 25, and 26 as well as Uhlan/Lancer Regiments 19 and 20 of the former Royal Württemberg Army with the Regimental headquarters located in Stuttgart-Cannstatt. Dent-free, steel scabbard retains approximately 95% of the original blued finish showing wear to the upper forward edge where a sword knot rubbed against the shell but, no major loss of finish. The obverse drag is stamped “W J . 1”. EX+
